REWARDS FOR ACADEMIC INTELLIGENCE: HONOURS AND MINORS DEGREE FOR MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

By: Dr. M. S. Kadam (hodmech@jnec.ac.in)
Date: 15th Sept 2021

JNEC allows students to pursue a range of supplemental courses either to explore personal interests or gain domain-specific proficiency to enhance their career opportunities. It certainly looks impressive on their resume that suits the most for the latest trends in the industry. Students are provided with a platform to develop their knowledge through additional learning opportunities in the form of Minor Degree and Honours degree.
Students can complete B. Tech (Mechanical Engg) with additional:

  • Honours Degree to develop disciplinary expertise
  • Minor degree to enhance multidisciplinary knowledge

HONOURS DEGREE AT MGMU:

Honours degree is helpful in enriching the knowledge in disciplinary area. It means students of Mechanical Engineering can enrich their knowledge in few advanced technologies related to Mechanical engineering in greater depth. Studying undergraduate program in combination with Honours permits to improve skills and knowledge, under the guidance of an experienced staff member, in your selected area. Honours is a degree that provides an opportunity to explore one’s passion and expertise before committing to any Master Degree or further higher education or even for any placement opportunities.

Honours Degree Scheme:

  1. For Honours Degree, students can select the advanced courses (subjects) of same programs. In simple words, Student from the B. Tech (Mechanical Engineering) can select the courses (subjects) offered by Mechanical Engineering only.
  2. This way, students of mechanical engineering can learn advanced courses of mechanical engineering in greater depth.
  3. Successful passing in these courses (subjects); students will be getting an additional degree, which is an Honours degree. It means, Student from Mechanical Engineering selected Honours as Robotics, will complete different courses (subjects) of Robotics. Then that student will be awarded with B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering with Honours in Robotics.
  4. All departments will be offering different Honours and students of any department can select Honours offered by their department only.
  5. Once the Honours is finalized by students, they can select one course (subject) per semester from the list of courses (subjects) of that particular Honours degree.
  6. Few courses (subjects) of Honours degree will be online courses from platforms like NPTEL / COURSERA etc. The Scheme will be started from 3rd Semester of undergraduate program. NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) is massive online open course platform for accessing online courses taught by faculty members of leading Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). COURSERA is global massive online open course platform for accessing online courses taught by faculty members of leading foreign universities.
  7. For getting Minor degree, students need to have completion of 20 credits over the period of three years (Second year to final year).

Mechanical Engineering Honours Degree options are:
  • Robotics
  • Mechanical Engineering (Hon.)

MINORS DEGREE AT MGMU:

Honours degree is helpful in enriching the knowledge in multi-disciplinary areas. It means, students of Mechanical Engineering can develop their knowledge base in advanced technologies related to different engineering fields.

  2. This way, students of mechanical engineering can learn programming, artificial intelligence, electric vehicle, entrepreneurship, biotechnology also.
  3. Successful passing in these courses (subjects); students will be getting an additional degree, which is a minor degree. It means, Student from Mechanical Engineering selected minor as Artificial intelligence, will complete different courses (subjects) of Artificial Intelligence. Then that student will be awarded with B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering with Minor in Artificial Intelligence.
  4. All departments will be offering different Minors and students of any department can select Minor offered by any department.
  5. Once the minor is finalized by students, they can select one course (subject) per semester from the list of courses (subjects) of that particular minor degree.
  6. Few courses (subjects) of minor degree will be online courses from platforms like NPTEL / COURSERA etc. The Scheme will be started from 3rd Semester of undergraduate program.
  7. For getting Minor degree, students need to have completion of 20 credits over the period of three years (Second year to final year).

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING AT MGMU:
